Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings

Hype Squashed

It’s time to start taking Mario Bautista seriously.

While his last victory against Jose Aldo wasn’t exactly a crowd pleaser, the MMA Lab product built upon that performance with an impressive effort against former Bellator MMA king Patrick Mix at UFC 316 on Saturday in Newark, New Jersey. By keeping the fight standing and outdueling his celebrated foe, Bautista extends his Ultimate Fighting Championship winning streak to eight. He also moves up to No. 6 in Sherdog’s divisional rankings. Mix, who was previously ranked third, takes a fall to No. 11 after his own eight-bout winning streak was snapped in a largely uninspired showing.

Elsewhere, Waldo Cortes-Acosta earned his most significant triumph to date, taking a contentious unanimous decision over the previously ninth-ranked Serghei Spivac in a heavyweight clash at UFC 316. Cortes-Acosta’s striking-heavy style has led him to five consecutive victories and a debut in the heavyweight poll at No. 9.

Meanwhile, Azamat Murzakanov continues to tear through the competition at 205 pounds, as he scored a first-round technical knockout victory over Brendson Ribeiro. The Russian is now undefeated in 15 outings as he maintains his position in the light heavyweight Top 10. He’s asking for a main event bout next, and based on recent performances, he just may get it.

One of the brightest young talents on display at UFC 316 was Joshua Van, who dismantled Patrick “Patchy” Mix via third-round TKO in a preliminary flyweight contest. The 23-year-old has won seven of his eight promotional outings and appears primed to make a serious move at 125 pounds in the months to come. For now, he climbs to 14th in the latest flyweight poll.

And while the action at the top of both bantamweight divisions is addressed in greater detail in our pound-for-pound updates, Merab Dvalishvili is the clear No. 1 at 135 pounds for the men, and now, Kayla Harrison can join him as the women’s bantamweight champion. Both were dominant at UFC 316 and are well deserving of their positions.
